Tips to Beat the Winter “BLAHS”

At this time of year, many clients are suffering from seasonal effective disorder “SAD”, also known as the winter “BLAHS”. Men, women, and children have been reporting depressed moods most of the day. Sometimes they even lose interest in their jobs and school, experience psychomotor agitation, loss of energy, and difficulty concentrating. They talk of being tired of cold gloomy days with minimal sunshine.

Here are a few tips that might help:

1. Exercise, at any time of the year–frequent, intense physical activity (joining a health club, walking in well lit indoor places (malls, super markets, home improvement stores), or any type of outdoor physical activity). Not only will it help you stay in shape but the endorphin chemicals released in your brain will lower your stress level.

2. Eat healthy foods– this is sometimes difficult, but staying away from junk foods and ingesting nutritional foods can also help.

3. If you can afford it, vacation to a warm climate that includes plenty of sunshine and outdoor fun filled activities. Here in Michigan we have wonderful indoor water parks throughout the state that can also be utilized.

4. If you have tried these activities and still feel blue, you may want to discuss this with a professional. Please feel free to contact us at one of our locations listed below.
